The best Linux distribution, if you don't fear to wet your feet is Slackware.
If you want news, try Newsforge for nice reports on what's going on, by the same guys (OSDN) that bring us Sourceforge, or Linux Today for a news summary.

There are some good Linux sites in Brazil now (June/2002). I like .BR (ponto BR), Linux in Brazil, and TcheLinux .
